The government has introduced new flexibilities under the Per Drop More Crop (PDMC) scheme, empowering States and Union Territories to undertake micro-level water storage and conservation activities, such as constructing diggis and water harvesting systems. These revised guidelines eliminate previous funding restrictions, allowing states to exceed the earlier caps of 20% for general states/UTs and 40% for North Eastern/Himalayan states and specific UTs, based entirely on their specific local requirements. This aims to ensure reliable and sustainable water availability for micro-irrigation projects.

The Per Drop More Crop (PDMC) scheme, currently implemented under the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (PM-RKVY) since 2022-23, has a significant evolutionary history, originating as the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for Micro Irrigation in January 2006. The PM-RKVY itself was restructured in October 2024 to become an umbrella scheme merging nine agricultural initiatives, with a total of ₹8,957.72 crore released/sanctioned for 2025-26, including ₹3,226.36 crore specifically dedicated to the PDMC scheme, providing state governments with enhanced flexibility in fund allocation.
